Revolutionizing Road Safety: CollisionEye is Preventing Accidents at ASFINAG & ÖAMTC

Every year, thousands of accidents occur on highways, often involving vehicles working on or near the road. These incidents not only cause injuries and fatalities but also disrupt traffic flow and increase emergency response times. Addressing this challenge, the Austrian companies ASFINAG and ÖAMTC have been testing a new collision warning system called CollisionEye since last autumn. The results so far show promising improvements in preventing accidents and protecting road workers and drivers alike.


How CollisionEye Works to Prevent Collisions


CollisionEye uses a combination of camera technology and artificial intelligence to monitor the road environment around vehicles equipped with the system. The camera detects approaching vehicles from up to 300 meters away. Then, the AI analyzes their trajectories to predict if a collision risk exists.


When the system identifies a potential danger, it triggers a two-stage warning:


  • Vibration alert for road workers: People working on the road receive a vibration signal through wearable devices. This early warning gives them precious seconds to move to safety.

  • Loud horn signal for approaching drivers: At the same time, the system emits a loud honking sound to alert the driver of the approaching vehicle, encouraging them to slow down or change course.


This dual-alert approach helps both parties react quickly and avoid accidents.


Real-World Impact from the Test Phase


Since the test phase began, ASFINAG and ÖAMTC have installed CollisionEye on a total of 20 vehicles—nine ASFINAG vehicles and eleven ÖAMTC vehicles. The system has already prevented at least ten potential accidents on highways in June alone. These incidents involved vehicles approaching road workers too closely or too fast, where the CollisionEye warnings allowed timely evasive actions.


Encouraged by these results, both organizations plan to equip about 20 more vehicles each with CollisionEye in the coming weeks. This expansion will increase the system’s coverage and further improve highway safety.

What This Means for Road Safety in Austria and Beyond


The success of CollisionEye’s test phase shows how technology can support safer roads. Road workers often face high risks due to speeding or inattentive drivers. By giving them early warnings and alerting drivers directly, CollisionEye helps prevent accidents before they happen.


As more vehicles are equipped with this system, the potential to save lives and reduce injuries grows. Other countries and road safety organizations may look to adopt similar technology to protect their highways.


Looking Ahead: Expanding the Reach of CollisionEye


The next steps involve scaling up the deployment of CollisionEye across more vehicles and roadwork sites. This will provide more data to refine the system and demonstrate its benefits on a larger scale.
